Synopsis
Supreme Commander Laurie Morgan invites her estranged husband Rod to accompany her home from the Counselor planet Umbrae, but while she’s focused on returning to her supreme commander duties after a brief absence, Rod thinks he’s back in her good graces even though he recently sided against her with the duplicitous alien Counselors. Still wary of him, Laurie asks one of the Counselors, Bloasphr, an identical copy of herself at age eighteen, to come with them as a chaperone. But Rod is soon enchanted with the sexy Bloasphr, who speaks of uncanny energy flowing between herself and Rod.
Rod delivers a passionate speech on his New Vitality political philosophy to human, Martian, and Alpha Centaurian delegates at a United System Council meeting. The assembly is so captivated that it votes to make him supreme ruler of the United System. Bloasphr ruminates on the inexplicable force of Charisma Union enabling Rod to grab such power.
Laurie leaves in disgust at Rod’s glib oration, fleeing to the farthest realm in the United System, Groombridge 1618, sixteen light-years away. The Maroxins of that system wish to secede from the overbearing Alpha Centaurian Confederation, and Laurie accepts their offer to command their new military Surge Force, even as she dismisses their spacecraft designer Norr Morgan as a crude sexist pig. She’s especially incensed to discover that Norr is Rod’s cousin, but she nevertheless finds him irresistible. Soon she finds herself making love to him aboard a parked spaceship in the deep night, where robot technicians arrive to lecture the pair about soulmates and marriage.
President Rod Morgan invites Mavis Wheeler, Laurie’s protege and the deputy commander of the United System Space Force, to his opulent new office to explain his baffling rise to dictator. Mavis, confused by his brainwashing skills, hopes she can pretend to be loyal to him while still serving Laurie.
Enthralled with Rod, Bloasphr doesn’t understand the sexual energies her newly-created human body generates, and Rod seduces her. They now know that their powerful union is destroying the Martians’ telepathic powers and scrambling their minds. Bloasphr realizes she’s in love with Rod, yet also trapped with him in a Charisma Union that keeps him in power.
